Emergency Relief

Helping our Community in Times of Need

Food Assistance

Emergency relief is available to eligible clients by appointment. All requests undergo an assessment process, and assistance is limited. Small staple food parcels may be provided to help meet immediate needs.

Appointments

Appointments can be made in person or over the phone.

Please note: Due to limited funding, emergency relief food parcels cannot be relied upon for weekly or ongoing assistance. This support is intended for emergency, one-off situations only and is provided subject to availability.

No Interest Loans (NILS)

Hunter Region No Interest Loans Scheme provide a safe, fair, and affordable alternative line of credit for individuals and families on low incomes to purchase essential goods and services.

The HRNILS and the NILS Program are governed by Good Shepherd Australia New Zealand (GSANZ) and supported by the Australian Federal Government and the National Australia Bank (NAB).

HRNILS is proudly funded by the NSW State Government.

NILS Loans Are:

  • NO INTEREST
  • NO FEES
  • NO HIDDEN CHARGES

Clients can borrow up to $2,000 for essential items.

Please note: UHCS does not process NILS applications. We only assist clients by forwarding their applications to NILS on their behalf.

EAPA Assistance (Energy Accounts Payment Assistance)

UHCS provides appointments to support clients who are experiencing difficulty paying their electricity bills through the Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) scheme.

EAPA is a NSW Government program designed to help households facing short-term financial hardship. Eligible clients may receive EAPA vouchers, which are sent directly to their electricity provider to reduce the amount owing on their bill.

EAPA assistance can help with:

  • Reducing outstanding electricity bills
  • Providing short-term financial relief during periods of hardship
  • Supporting clients to maintain essential household energy supply

During your appointment, UHCS staff will:

  • Assess your eligibility for EAPA
  • Submit EAPA vouchers electronically on your behalf
  • Provide information on managing energy bills and accessing additional supports if needed
Please note:

EAPA assistance is not ongoing income support. Eligibility and voucher amounts are determined by NSW Government guidelines.
